The Right Canes. What Kind and Why

Canes should be selected and set based on stability and agility of the user.

The single point style is the easier to maneuver having only one bearing point and a rubber tip for safety.

The four point model is more stable but is also heavier. The four bearing points have rubber tips for safety similar to the single point.

The handle should be considered for grip. A curved handle is typical; a pistol grip handle is easier to grasp as it shaped for the hand.

The Merck Manual of Health and Aging notes that the height is important, as too high or too short can cause low back pain and poor posture. It also makes the user unsteady. The handle should come to the crease of the wrist when the arm hangs down by the side. It should be held in the hand opposite to the weak or painful leg. Follow the techniques directed by a physical therapist.
