Medicare, Medicaid and Hospice. Where's It Coming From?

"The Department of Health and Human Services" and "The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services" publishes a handbook that is available for your understanding of the programs and the expected costs. It and other information can be obtained by calling 1-800-633-4227 or go their website. Constant changes occur to improve these programs, most recently the drug coverage. A quick overview is offered below and will be expanded in the near future.

Medicare is a federal government program for people 65 or older, under 65 with certain disabilities, and any age with End-stage Renal Disease. Originally it consisted of Part A for hospital coverage at no cost to the participant, and Part B for Physician and Services at a monthly fee deducted from the Social Security check. Later it allowed the participant to choose an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) called Part C. Most recently is the addition of Part D for Prescription Drug Coverage. Be sure to compare your current drug costs against the cost of the drug program and the deductible before you sign up.

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program to help pay medical costs for qualified persons of limited resources and income. Coverage and limits of income vary from state to state. The state Medicaid Office can offer more information.

Hospice is coverage under Part A of Medicare for those persons with a terminal illness. It includes drugs for symptom control and pain relief, medical support, and some additional services not listed here. Most existing hospice centers and care are non-profit organizations.

For-profit hospice organizations are entering the care market. Be sure to check how they are paid and what possible charges you would incur before accepting these facilities.
