Physical Preparation. Can You Handle This Part of Caregiving?

Physical Preparation means to consider that the physical demands of the caregiver can change, depending on the mobility of the caregiven. A reduction in mobility for the patient can mean the caregiver is actually lifting and handling the individual physically: assisting in rising or sitting; in and out of bed; up and down stairs etc. It's easy to walk with someone, to prepare a meal and serve it. It's another thing when strength is needed to assist someone in motions they would normally do for themselves.

The caregiver should be taught the proper lifting and assistance techniques and their limitations. Improper handling can result in injury to the patient and/or the caregiver. Check with the hospital Social Services or other health care agencies for possible courses. First Aid courses usually include some basic instructions, and a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation course(CPR) can be invaluable. The YMCA may offer certain helpful classes and programs as well as exercise regimens.
