Raised Toilet Seats and Bedside Potty Chairs- Sometimes Necessary

Raised toilet seats are great where it is difficult to rise and sit in the bathroom. These were seen early on for those who had hip surgery or some other condition and not quite ready to bend the knees and hips for that ninety degree position. Many older people with arthritic conditions find them beneficial anytime. These units are made at different heights and are a washable plastic. They sit on the toilet frame to give the added lift.

Bedside potty chairs are helpful when the trip to the bathroom is just too far to travel due to health conditions. These are built with rails in a frame so the user has stability, and a plastic bucket under a standard toilet seat so the bowl can be emptied and cleaned. They can be set for the right height and make easy transfer from the bed to the seat. Not something we really want to think about, but sometimes the necessity makes us appreciate the availability. It often is easier than a bedpan and gives the user full natural support.

Until a patient is able to rise and sit comfortably in a chair, chair extenders and cushions can be used to raise a chair to the more comfortable height for a temporary solution.

Check to be sure if these items are covered by Medicare or other insurance.
